In the state of Maharashtra in India, they have a very unusual tradition: Newborns are thrown 50 feet off of a temple. The tradition has been performed for more than 500 years and is believed to provide the child with strength, good luck into the adulthood and courage and intelligence.

A person drops the baby from the roof of a 50 feet high temple. Below the temple are people standing with a stretched sheet to catch the “airbornes”. Although being critized and suggested to be banned by government, there has been no reported evidence of any babies being injured during the event.
