The Democratic People’s Repuplic of Korea, also commonly called North Korea, introduced a new calendar system back in 1997. They had previously used the Gregorian or Western calendar which is the most widely accepted calendar internationally. But in 1997 they began using the Juche calendar, which is based on the founder Kim Il Sungs date of birth 15 April 1912.

The Khasi tribe in India builds living bridges using tree roots

The Khasi tribe in Indian state of Meghalaya is living in one of the wettest places on earth. In fact, the city of Cheerapunji in the region is credited as the wettest place on earth. For the people living in the forests, this is a problem as flooding is quite normal in the monsoon season. The solution? Build a bridge across the waters that does not care if the waters rise. For more than 500 years, the Khasi tribe has used the Indian rubber tree, Ficus elastica, to build natural, living bridges.

The giant 15 metre-tall inflatable poop art installation in Hong Kong

An ‘abstract’ sculpture has attracted a lot of attention in Hong Kong these days. The 15.5 metre-tall installation named Complex Pile, by American artist Paul McCarthy, resembles a giant poop. The exhibition is organised by the West Kowloon visual culture center with the name of “M+”. According to the museum’s director, he wasn’t sure what the artist was trying to achieve.

Chess Boxing – a hybrid sport combining chess and boxing

Ever heard of Chess Boxing? As the name indicates, it’s a hybrid sport combining chess with boxing in alternating rounds. It originates from the French artist and filmmaker Enki Bilal who pictured it in his comic book Froid Equator in 1992. The idea of Chess Boxing was picked up by the Dutch artist Lepe Rubingh in 2003, where he organized the first real event.

World’s largest public bathroom in China with 1000 toilets

The Chinese city of Chongqing holds a weird kind of world record. The world record for the largest bathroom. In Chongqing they built a porcelain palace with an Egyptian facade and more than 1000 toilets in a four-story building of 3000 square meters (32000 square feet).

Man creates multi-coloured ants in his backyard

Mohamed Babus wife discovered that ants that had been drinking spilt milk in their backyard, turned white. Mohamed, a scientist from India, was amazed by the phenomenon and decided to do a little research himself. He noticed that the abdomens of the ants were somewhat transparent and thereby causing them to look white as they ate spilt milk.

Meet 39-year-old Liu Ye from Zhuhai city, China. He’s married to 39-year-old Liu Ye from Zhuhai city, China. Yes, Liu actually married himself back in 2007. In front of more than 100 guests, Liu and a foam cut-out of himself in a bridal dress, said Yes to each other. Or, probably only one of the Liu’s actually said it.

The women only car park in the Wonder Mall in China

In the Wonder Mall in Shijiazhuang, China, they’ve built a car park for women only. Each parking space is one meter wider than the average space, making it possible for women to park without damaging neighboring vehicles, as a mall representative explains. The car park for women has also been painted in pink and purple colours, to better fit it’s targeted audience. The question is: is it discriminating against men to not allow them access or provocative against women by insinuating they can’t park the car in normal sized lots? (via: imagechina.com).

Korean Lee Jin-Gyu fell in love with his pillow. The pillow known as ‘dakimakura‘, is a Japanese pillow type, large and hugable and with a picture of a anime character on the side. On Lee’s dakimakura is a picture of Fate Testarossa, a character from the anime series Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha.
